This workshop will examine the complex issues of trauma, coping skills, and tactics of power and control that abusive partners commonly utilize when victims use substances and/or have a mental health diagnoses as well as the abusive partner’s role in substance use stigma and stereotyping. Attendees will discuss the signs and symptoms of substance use, trauma, and common mental health disorders seen in DV services including the Disease Model, severity levels, the opioid epidemic, and Medication Assisted Treatment. Attendees will leave with best practices for engagement, outreach, shelter, etc. as well as practical safety planning tips and techniques to improve services for survivors.
